South of France New Eurostar Service

From the 1st May 2015 arriving in the South of France will be even easier thanks to a new Eurostar service travelling directly from London to Marseille each day. Journey time is around 6 and half hours which compares more than favourably with check in times, flight times and time remaining to collect your luggage - and of course no luggage restrictions.

Arriving at Marseille Gare Saint Charles you are able to pick up a rental car and head directly into the heart of Provence or across to the French Riviera. Or perhaps a 2 centre holiday with a week on the Cote d'Azur and then a week or two enjoying the quieter, more relaxed lifestyle in a Provencal village.

Provence Villas to Rent in Hidden Provence

Provence, land of sunflowers, crisp rose wine and inspiration for some of the worlds finest art produced by the impressionist school. Van Gough is the epitome of all that symbolises Provence but did you know that Van Gough spent much of his time in Provence painting from the now famous asylum on the outskirts of St Remy de Provence?

Just behind the hospital is a hidden gem, Lolo's Restaurant.  Lolos’s family have lived in this ‘trogdolite’ house, built into the rocks of an ancient Roman quarry, for over 400 years and started cooking 20 years ago when he retired aged 70!There is no menu but the food is copious and delicious as is the local wine. There are many restaurants like this in Provence, where you just trust that as it's full with local French families that the food will be delicious and it usually is.

Delicious food and wine at Lolo's

St Remy is celebrated for art and antiques and there are many wonderful 'brocante' to explore throughout this very pretty Provencal village.

St Remy de Provence Holiday villas to Rent

St Remy De Provence is a beautiful Provencal village nestled deep in the French countryside, located to the east of Arles, the south of Avignon and the west of Salon De Provence.  The area is outstanding for its natural beauty and St Remy de Provence is a gem of a village, almost totally un-spoilt by the vagaries of time.

It has a famous connection with the painter Vincent Van Gogh who loved this village and the surrounding area.  He featured it in over 150 of his works, a significant part of his entire output, and a reflection of the beauty that many artists in addition to Van Gogh discovered in this area. Indeed probably overcome with its beauty he received psychiatric treatment at the Monastery Saint-Paul de Mausole, a 16th century
Enjoy a guided visit featuring Van Gogh, Nostradamus and the Glanum site, but if your requirements are slightly less high brow, then walking and hiking are available along with tennis, swimming, horse riding, petanque (the local name for the game of boule) and even fishing. For most of the year there are daily festivals, markets and other events for visitor’s entertainment.

Remy St Provence is a fascinating little place.  Leafy squares, ancient cobbled streets, alcoves and archways enclose a myriad of commercial establishments, offering art galleries, craft out lets, elegant boutiques, lovely restaurants, old fountains and cafe's throughout the village.  It is a leafy and lush environment with a long history of olive production in the area. It stands on one of the oldest archeological sites in Europe, with the third century "Comptoir de Glanum" predating the Roman influence by over 700 years. The "Grand Thermes" predates even the 3rd century ruins, claiming to be 10 -30 years BC, when they claim that the thermal waters were harnessed for local use, although I believe that is unlikely. There are however 2 official French monuments, the "L'Arc De Triomphe" and the "Mausolee des Antiques"

Nearby are some other Provencal villages which merit a visit.  By far the most popular, receiving a reputed 1.5 million visitors a year is nearby Les Baux De Provence, with no less than 22 historic monuments to see.  It also has a vast array of wonderful little shops selling crafts and the inevitable olives, but also some very elegant boutiques and a number of galleries and art shops.  Set above the Provencal plane at 245 metres above sea level, that's around 750 feet, it has the moat spectacular views over the Provence countryside.  Another village worth a visit is Maussane, one of the most important olive oil growing and producing areas in the whole of France.

To get to St Remy De Provence requires a car. There is precious little public transport in the area, and its remoteness from any major towns, whilst a godsend if you are looking for peace and quiet, can be a problem if you are not independently mobile.  Flying to the area, the nearest airport is Nimes, but that has only 3 regular destinations, Brussels, London Luton and Liverpool, all courtesy of our Irish friends Ryanair. There are other airports a little further away offering flights to many European destination, at Toulon and Marseilles, but international flights are rare unless you go to Nice, under 2 hours drive away, which has daily flights to Montreal, New York and almost every major European city.

5 Tips For a Family Villa Holiday in the South of France

Many of clients visiting the South of France and Provence and booking a villa with us are travelling with extended family or a group of friends. At Cote d'Azur Villas we have an excellent range of family villas to rent where children, grandparents and more can easily be accommodated.

Our 5 Top Tips for Having a wonderful Family Villa Holiday are.

1. Book Early! The larger villas are already getting booked up for summer and we are only in January.

2. Book your travel early and take advantage of early booking discounts with budget airlines such as easyJet.

3. Book 2 or 3 smaller rental cars. Trying to drive a minibus through the cobbled Provencal streets can be a nightmare and what happens when some of you want to go to the beach and the girls want to go shopping?

4. Discuss the budget - Who is going to pay for what? Does everything need to be shared? How about setting up a kitty and using that for all the food shopping and days out?

5. Make sure the children are happy - because when the little ones are all having a good time then the adults can relax. Many of our larger rental villas have childrens play areas, games and books for the children and of course that all important DVD player for a quiet time when the sun is at its peak.

The real Provence...

What says more about the South of France than Provence. Images of lavender fields, olive groves and rows of ripening vines, street cafes in medieval market squares and red mountains glinting in the sunset, and best of all – it’s all still here!

This is the real Provence, made famous by the books of Peter Mayle but still as alive and vibrant as it was centuries ago. A holiday in Provence is a holiday to remember. Villas are stone ‘mas’, spacious and exquisitely restored houses, bathed in the scent of rosemary and lavender and overlooking the miles of rolling countryside. From here you can explore the historic centres of Aix-en-Provence and St Remy de Provence, the amazing Cathedral des Papes at Avignon or the dominant fortified towns of Gordes, Bonnieux and Roussillon. There’s so much to see and do that you will always return to this stunning region.

New Villa - Mas de la Treille - Maubec, Luberon

We have a new charming property situated in the small village of Maubec in the Luberon, close to the many delightful hill villages and activities which this area offers. There is a small food shop in Maubec, and more in nearby Coustellet. The villages of Oppède-le-Vieux, Gordes, Ménerbes and Bonnieux are all within a 15 minute drive.

Although a village house, it is hidden from view behind a stone wall, and accessed by electric security gates. Within the walled garden is a swimming pool (9 x 5m, heated on request) with pool house, and beyond this a lovely covered terrace from where the views to the Luberon mountain range can be enjoyed.

The building is divided into two parts the main part comprising the living area, tastefully decorated with antique furniture, and equipped with satellite television, and two bedrooms. The second part houses the other three bedrooms and a typical provençal living room, opening to a covered terrace. There is air conditioning in the bedrooms, and the property also has internet access.
